Click, Squeal, Giggle
You come home in the spring; Joe carries you inside while Zora sniffs your toes.
This book holds the small things of our year: fan clicks, bath splashes, Zora’s wag.
You kick. Water pats the tub. Tiny hands clap suds onto the towel.
Joe rubs your head with a warm towel. You burble and reach for the duck.
Zora waits at the door. You grin and shake water like a tiny fountain.
Zora sniffs your fingers and gently pats the floor with her tail.
You laugh and reach. Zora leans in and presses her cool nose to your hand.
You crawl toward Zora and she dances away, quick paws and an eager wiggle.
A white dot peeks at the corner of your gum. Joe says, "Hello, tooth."
You bite the ring and look up. The tooth tickles and a tiny laugh pops out.
You toddle after Zora. Little legs pump; paws skitter away like a small drumroll.
Zora circles the couch. You clap and crawl faster, giggles bubbling like bath water.
You chase. Zora dodges and looks back, tongue out, proud of the little game.
You lift a foot and step to Joe. One tiny step, then another, then the door.
Joe clips your harness. You wobble down the path with small, determined steps.
You wave one small hand. The caregiver lifts you with both hands and guides you inside.
Your first word is "dada." Joe laughs and leans in. Zora drops her ear.
You say "dada" again. Zora stares at Joe like she lost her front-row seat.
Zora leans on Joe's knee and gives a small, offended sigh-noise at your "dada."
The fan clicks in a steady rhythm. You look up and squeal when it spins.
The click-click of the fan keeps time with your breathing. Small sighs fill the room.
You squeal every time the fan starts. The house keeps that click and your small laugh.
Pause. You breathe slow against Joe’s chest. We stop and listen to the little sounds.
Joe keeps these pages. He reads them to you and points out the fan, the tooth, Zora.
You come home in the spring, and the fan clicks welcome you back.

Tap, tap, tap, go his feet on the floor. The city is not sleepy yet. And neither is Sanjeev.
The sun has said goodnight to the city. Sanjeev is cozy in his room, but his ears are still listening.
A pigeon lands on the sill. She puffs her chest and looks at Sanjeev with a kind, sleepy eye. She seems to say, "Shhh... listen."
Then, a soft sound. Coo, coo, coo.
Can you hear the trees in the park? Rustle, rustle, whisper, shush. The leaves are telling stories to the wind.
Shhh... listen. The city is whispering.
Clink, clank, click. The baker locks his door. The pretzel cart rolls home. Swoosh, swoosh, sweep. Goodnight, little shop.
Shhh... listen. The city is tidying up.
The cars on the bridge are sleepy rivers of light. Whoosh... go the red lights. Shoosh... go the white lights. A soft, slow river.
Shhh... listen. The city is breathing.
Slower now. Softer now.
The city breathes in. Hummmmmm. The city breathes out. Hummmmmm.
It doesn't make a sound. It just glows a soft, sleepy light. A nightlight for the whole city.
Shhh... listen. The tallest building is watching.
The pigeon coos one last time. A quiet, rumbling, coo-roo-coo. A goodnight hum.
Sanjeev is sleepy now. The city sounds are a soft blanket.
He pulls his warm blanket up to his chin. Goodnight, pigeon. Thank you.
Tiptoe, tiptoe. Sanjeev climbs into his bed.
Tick-tock goes the clock. Hummmm goes the heat. The sounds of home.
Shhh... listen. The house is whispering now.
Sanjeev is sleeping.
Safe in his room. Warm in his bed.
Goodnight, busy streets. Goodnight, tall buildings. Goodnight, New York. Goodnight.
