Click, Squeal, Giggle
Scene background
You come home in the spring; Joe carries you inside while Zora sniffs your toes.
Scene background
This book holds the small things of our year: fan clicks, bath splashes, Zora’s wag.
Scene background
You kick. Water pats the tub. Tiny hands clap suds onto the towel.
Scene background
Joe rubs your head with a warm towel. You burble and reach for the duck.
Scene background
Zora waits at the door. You grin and shake water like a tiny fountain.
Scene background
Zora sniffs your fingers and gently pats the floor with her tail.
Scene background
You laugh and reach. Zora leans in and presses her cool nose to your hand.
Scene background
You crawl toward Zora and she dances away, quick paws and an eager wiggle.
Scene background
A white dot peeks at the corner of your gum. Joe says, "Hello, tooth."
Scene background
You bite the ring and look up. The tooth tickles and a tiny laugh pops out.
Scene background
You toddle after Zora. Little legs pump; paws skitter away like a small drumroll.
Scene background
Zora circles the couch. You clap and crawl faster, giggles bubbling like bath water.
Scene background
You chase. Zora dodges and looks back, tongue out, proud of the little game.
Scene background
You lift a foot and step to Joe. One tiny step, then another, then the door.
Scene background
Joe clips your harness. You wobble down the path with small, determined steps.
Scene background
You wave one small hand. The caregiver lifts you with both hands and guides you inside.
Scene background
Your first word is "dada." Joe laughs and leans in. Zora drops her ear.
Scene background
You say "dada" again. Zora stares at Joe like she lost her front-row seat.
Scene background
Zora leans on Joe's knee and gives a small, offended sigh-noise at your "dada."
Scene background
The fan clicks in a steady rhythm. You look up and squeal when it spins.
Scene background
The click-click of the fan keeps time with your breathing. Small sighs fill the room.
Scene background
You squeal every time the fan starts. The house keeps that click and your small laugh.
Scene background
Pause. You breathe slow against Joe’s chest. We stop and listen to the little sounds.
Scene background
Joe keeps these pages. He reads them to you and points out the fan, the tooth, Zora.
Scene background
You come home in the spring, and the fan clicks welcome you back.

Misha Lights the Sky
Scene background
Misha kept a jar of paper stars on the shelf.
Misha loved the tiny lights.
Misha sat by the window and watched the stars.
Scene background
Misha felt safe and steady.
Misha whispered to the sky.
Misha opened the jar and pretended to sprinkle light.
Scene background
Misha wondered where the star lights had gone.
Misha counted empty patches.
Misha looked up and noticed space was quiet.
Scene background
Misha decided to find them.
Misha imagined the stars hiding.
Misha pressed a hand to the cool glass.
Scene background
Misha smiled when the robot blinked awake.
Misha tapped the console and called, "CharlieTwo."
Misha climbed into a paper rocket.
Scene background
Misha watched the earth shrink and the dark grow wide.
Misha held CharlieTwo’s tiny hand.
Misha guided the rocket up and out.
Scene background
Misha told CharlieTwo, "We can try."
Misha breathed in a little slow breath.
Misha felt a tiny flutter in the chest.
Scene background
Misha said aloud, "We will find them."
Misha put both hands on the wheel.
Misha felt a flutter and a steadying thought.
Scene background
Misha tapped and the dot stayed quiet.
Misha hummed a little tune.
Misha stretched a glowing glove toward a dim dot.
Scene background
Misha waited, but the sky stayed quiet.
Misha shook the jar for luck.
Misha spilled a handful of paper stars into the dark.
Scene background
Misha saw nothing light up.
Misha pressed every button she could find.
Misha scanned the emptiness with CharlieTwo.
Scene background
Misha hoped the song would wake it.
Misha turned the lamp soft and low.
Misha hummed a warm song near the sleeping star.
Scene background
Misha took a breath and did not pout.
Misha felt the plan wobble like a loose peg.
Misha watched the lamp and the song fail.
Scene background
Misha felt the wobble grow and the chest tighten.
Misha counted pieces on the table.
Misha looked at all the tricks that did not work.
Scene background
Misha squeezed CharlieTwo’s hand for courage.
Misha listened to every ping.
CharlieTwo blinked bright and showed a map of night routines.
Scene background
Misha felt a light of hope.
Misha read each word like a promise.
CharlieTwo said, "We can try small, slow steps."
Scene background
Misha spoke soft words like small keys.
Misha whispered to each star as they passed.
Misha followed the plan with careful, steady motions.
Scene background
Misha felt the phrase settle like a warm blanket.
Misha said the words out loud, "Staying calm in the dark."
Misha remembered a helpful way to feel strong.
Scene background
Misha held the quiet like a lantern.
Misha moved like the plan said.
Misha breathed slow and steady.
Scene background
Misha brushed the star with a careful touch.
Misha kept breathing steady and soft.
Misha hummed and the star blinked a little.
Scene background
Misha watched the sky stitch itself with light.
Misha kept the rhythm of calm breath.
Misha moved through the dark and woke one star after another.
Scene background
Misha felt a steady bravery bloom like dawn.
Misha named each constellation aloud.
Misha pointed as patterns returned.
Scene background
Misha smiled and let out a tiny laugh.
Misha felt the hush lift like a curtain.
Misha saw the whole sky glow once more.
Scene background
Misha knew they had helped the night wake.
Misha watched the stars wink goodbye.
Misha steered the rocket toward home.
Scene background
Misha held the jar of paper stars close.
Misha felt the quilts smell like home.
Misha climbed back into bed with CharlieTwo.
Scene background
Misha felt safe and glad.
Nora listened to Misha tell the sky story.
Nora tugged the blanket up around Misha.
Scene background
Misha felt proud and peaceful.
Misha pointed out a bright star and said, "We did it."
Nora kissed Misha’s forehead and said the night was beautiful.
Scene background
Misha closed eyes and slept under the sparkling sky.
Misha breathed slow and remembered, "Staying calm in the dark."
Misha heard the jar tick like tiny stars.

Charlie's Big Universe
Scene background
Starring CharlieTwo and Cosmo!
My First Book of Space and the Solar System
Scene background
The Sun shines in the middle, and the planets travel around it on glowing paths.
Ready, explorer? Our solar system is a big, beautiful neighborhood in space!
Scene background
There is so much to see. Buckle up—our space trip is about to begin!
Farther out, the giant planets sparkle and spin!
Scene background
Those are stars and planets, far, far away. But not too far for us!
WOW! Look at all those sparkly lights in the sky!
Scene background
What do you think we will see first?
Let’s blast off and explore our solar system! 3… 2… 1… LIFT-OFF!
Are you ready for the biggest, most amazing adventure EVER?
Scene background
It is not a planet—it is a giant, super-hot star right in the middle of our solar system!
Look at that! It’s the SUN!
Scene background
Did you know? One million Earths could fit inside the Sun. Whoa!
It is like a giant heater for our whole neighborhood in space!
The Sun sends sunshine and warmth all the way to Earth.
Scene background
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, and it zips around super fast!
Whee! We’re on MERCURY!
Scene background
Can you hop up and down like you’re on Mercury?
One side of Mercury can be sizzling hot, and the other side can be freezing cold!
Boing, boing, boing! Let’s bounce from crater to crater.
Scene background
It looks soft and swirly, like lemon-yellow cotton candy.
Welcome to VENUS, the cloud-covered planet!
Scene background
What do you think is hiding under all those fluffy-looking clouds?
Even though it is not closest to the Sun, Venus is the hottest planet!
Venus has super thick clouds that hide the ground.
Scene background
That’s where we live! Earth is our beautiful blue-and-green home.
Look, look! It’s EARTH!
Scene background
What is your favorite thing about Earth?
From space, it looks like a swirly marble.
Earth has wonderful oceans, land, clouds, people, puppies, and ice cream!
Scene background
The Moon is Earth’s best friend, traveling around our planet and shining at night.
Let’s go to the MOON!
Scene background
Astronaut footprints can stay here for millions of years because there is no wind to blow them away.
Scene background
Everything is a beautiful rusty red color. Mars is called the Red Planet!
Vroom, vroom! We’re on MARS!
Scene background
If you had a space rover, what color would you paint it?
Olympus Mons is the biggest volcano in the whole solar system!
Mars has giant volcanoes and deep canyons to explore.
Scene background
It is the biggest planet in our solar system—the king of the planets!
WHOA! Jupiter is GIGANTIC!
Scene background
What do Jupiter’s swirls and stripes remind you of?
That big red spot is a giant storm bigger than Earth!
Jupiter is a gas giant, made mostly of swirling, stormy gases instead of solid ground.
Scene background
Its amazing rings sparkle and shine in the sunlight.
Yippee! SATURN is the most stylish planet!
Scene background
Would you rather slide on the rings or play hide-and-seek behind the ice chunks?
Some pieces are tiny like a speck. Some are big like a house!
Saturn’s rings are made of billions of pieces of ice, rock, and dust.
Scene background
It is tipped over on its side, like it is rolling through space.
Hee hee! This is URANUS!
Scene background
Can you try to spin while tilted to the side, just like Uranus?
Its pretty blue-green color comes from gas in its atmosphere.
Uranus is an ice giant and a very, very cold place. Brrrr!
Scene background
Neptune is far from the Sun, so it is cold, dark, and beautifully blue.
Hold on tight! We’ve reached deep blue NEPTUNE!
Scene background
What do you think a super-fast space wind would sound like?
Its winds can race faster than the fastest race cars on Earth.
Neptune is the windiest planet in the solar system!
Scene background
Look out! It’s a COMET!
Comets are like giant dirty snowballs made of ice, dust, and rock.
Scene background
If you could catch a ride on a comet, where would you want it to take you?
That tail can stretch millions of miles long!
When a comet gets close to the Sun, it warms up and grows a glowing tail.
Scene background
Our whole solar system is one tiny part of a giant city of stars called the MILKY WAY GALAXY.
Wow. Just… wow.
Scene background
If you discovered a new star, what would you name it?
Our Sun is just one little sparkle in this giant, beautiful swirl.
The Milky Way has billions and billions of stars—too many to count!
Scene background
We visited speedy planets, giant planets, icy planets, and our beautiful home, Earth.
What an incredible journey!
Scene background
Keep looking up, explorer. There is always more to discover! What was your favorite part?
But the best part of any adventure… is coming home.
We bounced on the Moon and surfed near a comet! Space is full of amazing things to explore.
Scene background
Good night, brave explorer. Dream big, look up, and wonder!
Back on Earth, the stars still twinkle overhead.

Sanjeev's Sleepy Night Sounds in the City That Never Sleeps
Scene background
Tap, tap, tap, go his feet on the floor. The city is not sleepy yet. And neither is Sanjeev.
The sun has said goodnight to the city. Sanjeev is cozy in his room, but his ears are still listening.
Scene background
A pigeon lands on the sill. She puffs her chest and looks at Sanjeev with a kind, sleepy eye. She seems to say, "Shhh... listen."
Then, a soft sound. Coo, coo, coo.
Scene background
Can you hear the trees in the park? Rustle, rustle, whisper, shush. The leaves are telling stories to the wind.
Shhh... listen. The city is whispering.
Scene background
Clink, clank, click. The baker locks his door. The pretzel cart rolls home. Swoosh, swoosh, sweep. Goodnight, little shop.
Shhh... listen. The city is tidying up.
Scene background
The cars on the bridge are sleepy rivers of light. Whoosh... go the red lights. Shoosh... go the white lights. A soft, slow river.
Shhh... listen. The city is breathing.
Scene background
Slower now. Softer now.
The city breathes in. Hummmmmm. The city breathes out. Hummmmmm.
Scene background
It doesn't make a sound. It just glows a soft, sleepy light. A nightlight for the whole city.
Shhh... listen. The tallest building is watching.
Scene background
The pigeon coos one last time. A quiet, rumbling, coo-roo-coo. A goodnight hum.
Sanjeev is sleepy now. The city sounds are a soft blanket.
Scene background
He pulls his warm blanket up to his chin. Goodnight, pigeon. Thank you.
Tiptoe, tiptoe. Sanjeev climbs into his bed.
Scene background
Tick-tock goes the clock. Hummmm goes the heat. The sounds of home.
Shhh... listen. The house is whispering now.
Scene background
Sanjeev is sleeping.
Safe in his room. Warm in his bed.
Scene background
Goodnight, busy streets. Goodnight, tall buildings. Goodnight, New York. Goodnight.
The city is sleeping, too.
